Ferrets are very exploratory by nature. They tend to poke their nose into everything in your house. So keep electric wires, sockets, rat poison, and medicinal syrups out of reach of your ferret. Ferret nose is a good indicator of its general health condition.
Ferrets are vulnerable to infection from any strain of the human influenza virus. It normally takes about a week for the ferret to totally recover from the flu symptoms. It could catch the flu from the owner or his family or from another ferret or animal.
When afflicted with the flu virus, ferret nose is inflamed and might become red. It shows symptoms like sneezing, discharge of mucus from the nose and watering from the eyes. Sometimes the discharge from the nose might be thick and greenish yellow in color. You might try some home remedies but should contact a veterinarian if symptoms are worsening.
The ferret could suffer from diarrhea and become dehydrated. It is advisable to feed the ferret at timely intervals and give it plenty of water when it is suffering from flu. Ferrets are tiny little creatures and their immune system can get compromised with recurrent attacks of flu. So care should be taken to prevent it as far as possible.
Sometimes there is stuffing of the nose due to flu. The ferret experiences difficulty in breathing and shows this by making sniffing noises. This is a sign of congestion and salt water treatment can be done to alleviate its nasal congestion.
A clean cloth is dipped in warm salt water. It is squeezed so that water does not drip from it. This cloth is placed at the ferret's nose. As it inhales the vapors pass through the nose and relieve the congestion. The eyes should not come into contact with the salt water.
The ferret flu is similar to human flu. Do contact a veterinarian if you do not find symptoms abating with home remedies. He will make a correct diagnosis and suggest appropriate medication or remedial measures.
